Flat Clearance Croydon Health & Safety Policy
This Health and Safety Policy sets out the commitment of our flat clearance and rubbish removal teams to maintain a safe working environment for employees, contractors and members of the public. The scope covers all aspects of flat clearance, waste clearance and domestic junk removal activities within our service area. The policy has been drafted to meet statutory obligations and to reflect best practice expected of a professional rubbish company and clearance provider.
Our organisation recognises that effective safety management is fundamental to operational reliability. All staff engaged in house clearance, flat stripping and rubbish collect-and-remove duties will be provided with training and personal protective equipment appropriate to the tasks. We insist on safe systems of work and on reporting and learning from incidents and near misses to continuously improve our waste removal practices.
Procedures for manual handling, vehicle loading, asbestos awareness, sharps and hazardous materials are documented and regularly reviewed. Every operative must follow these procedures and must never undertake work beyond their training. The policy emphasises that safe lifting techniques, use of lifting aids and teamwork are essential when performing heavy or bulky rubbish removal tasks.
Responsibilities and Accountability
The management team holds ultimate responsibility for health and safety policy implementation, while supervisors and team leaders are charged with day-to-day enforcement. All employees are required to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and to co-operate with supervisors in implementing protective measures. Contractors working alongside our teams must present evidence of competency and comply with our site rules.
Risk assessments are completed for each job type, including flat clearance, garden waste removal and bulky item disposal. These assessments inform job briefings prior to commencement of work and drive the selection of control measures. Controls include safe access arrangements, cordons for public protection, dust suppression where needed and lock-out protocols for electricity when working near potential sources.
Key elements of our safety system include documented method statements, personal protective equipment (PPE) lockers, vehicle safety checks and a permit-to-work approach for high-risk operations such as working at height or dealing with unknown chemical waste. Our rubbish service area protocols require that all waste streams are segregated and handled according to environmental and health standards.
Training, Competence and Communication
Staff competence is maintained through a mixture of induction training, toolbox talks and periodic refresher courses. Training covers topics such as manual handling, use of handheld and powered tools, traffic and loading bay safety, and safe operation of removal vans. We use competency checks and spot audits to ensure standards are sustained.
Communication is central to safety performance: pre-job briefings, clear signage, and radio or phone contact protocols are standard. We maintain an incident reporting system and encourage an open safety culture where hazards are reported and assessed without blame. Records of training, risk assessments and incident logs are retained in line with regulatory expectations.
Emergency procedures are in place for first aid, fire and spill response. First aid kits and fire-fighting equipment are carried on vehicles and located at main operating bases. Staff are trained to stabilise an incident scene and summon professional emergency services as required. Evacuation routes and muster points are defined for any residential building where clearance activity is taking place.
Our commitment extends to continuous improvement through regular internal audits, review meetings and engagement with industry guidance. The policy is reviewed annually or following any significant incident, change in legislation or operational activity that may affect risk. Changes are communicated promptly to all teams and incorporated into job practices.
To summarise our core safety controls, the following minimum standards are applied to every clearance operation:
- Pre-job risk assessment and documented method statement
- PPE appropriate to the task (gloves, eye protection, high-visibility clothing)
- Safe manual handling procedures and use of mechanical aids
- Vehicle checks and secure load procedures for transport of waste
- Waste segregation and compliant disposal practices
Compliance with this policy is a condition of employment and contractual engagement. Failure to comply with safety standards will be addressed through our disciplinary procedures or contractor management process. Management will provide the resources necessary to implement this policy and ensure that safety remains integral to operational planning.
